Mangaluru: Though CCTV cameras installed in city limits, it has not prevented the bus drivers from speaking on their mobile phones while driving. Hence, a senior citizen has urged the police department to take stringent action against the bus drivers who use mobile phones while driving.
The issue was raised during the weekly phone-in-programme at Commissioner of Police office on Friday, May 10, wherein the senior citizen said that when the passengers asked the drivers not to use phone while driving, it always led to a quarrel. Hence, the police should voluntarily book case against such drivers to ensure that the offence is not committed, he urged.
Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil informed that police had booked cases against many such drivers on several occasions. The public can pass on the information to the WhatsApp number 9480802300, if they found any driver using mobile phone while driving. The identity of the informer would be kept a secret, he added.
Meanwhile, callers also complained about the truck drivers who transport sand, cement, urea among others without covering them on the surface. Though there are guidelines to cover such products with tarpaulins while transporting, most of the drivers violate the guidelines, added callers.
Callers also raised the issue of fish carriers discharging water on the roads. Responding to it, Sandeep Patil assured of proper action against the drivers who violate the guidelines while transporting goods. Meanwhile, he informed that notice had been issued to the fish carrying trucks, asking them not to discharge wastewater on roads. A total of 10 cases were filed against fish carrying vehicles within a week for the violation, he said.
DCPs Lakshmi Ganesh and Hanumantharaya were present.
