Mangalore, Mar 20: The Indian Police Act of 1861 that was introduced after the first freedom struggle is outdated at present times and needs amendments, said western range IGP Pratap Reddy.
IGP Pratap Reddy was speaking after inaugurating workshop on human rights – advocacy that was organized by political science department of St Aloysius College at their Xavier auditorium here on Wednesday March 20.
It is not possible to protect human rights only by means of laws. The local culture also has influence on human rights. Its owing to lapses in Indian police set up the police force is helpless in taking a clear stance unless a certain amendments are made to said Act. The society blames police force whenever there is violation of human rights. Nevertheless, one should realize that even police are human beings with their own emotions, said IGP Reddy.
The general awareness on human rights abuse can curb violation of such rights, added IGP Reddy.
St Aloysius College principal Fr Swebert DSilva in his presidential address said if one pursues the people across the world belongs to one human race and are equal the rising cases of human rights abuse will come to minimal. The cases related to oppression of poor by rich are significant, while one should be willing to take any violation cases rather serve lip service, said Dr DSilva.
North Carolina University Parofessor Dr Vivian Lord presented a paper on women and crime related justice after the stage programme.
