Poornima soars high against all odds

Puttur : Poverty cannot stand between dreams in case one is ready to work hard and face all challenges with dedication and sincerity.

Poornima P, a second year degree student of Alwas college, is one of the four players from karnataka and the only girl from DK district to represent India in international throwball tourney to be held in Kuala Lumpur in Malasia in August. Hailing from a very poor family which survives only on the wages of her mother who works households. But Her parents ensured that she could study and hence enrolled her to a govt. school.

Born to Balanna Gowda and Umavathi, Poornima hails from Ariyadka village of Puttur taluk and she completed her primary and high school education at Papemajalu govt school.

In primary school she used to play volley ball and she had also represented the school team at taluk,state and mational levels. She was introduced to throw ball in high school. As she was good in sport, was made the captain of the schools throw ball team. Due to extreme poverty her family couldnot fund her PU studies and she had also decided to stop studies after SSLC. However with the support of a well-wisher she managed to get a seat at Shree Krishna PU College,Patte,Puttur.

After PU due to her sports achievements she got a free seat to pursue BA degree at Alwas college. Here she used to practice throw ball from 5.30am to 8am later she would attend college. Her practice session would start again from 4pm to 7pm and then she completed her college assignments and study till late night.

Her hard work brought her success as the karnataka team won the championship at the Senior National Womens Throw ball tournament held in Nagpur in 2012 and also as the runners up in the tournament held in Haryana in 2013. 

Her Primary physical director was Vanitha and in PU she was guided by coach Monappa. Her present coach from Alvas College is Uday Kumar, is the physical director of the college. At present she is putting together her resources for the expenses and hopes to get kind hearted sponsers.
