Mangaluru: City police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar informed on Wednesday that the culprit behind the live mobile phone in University ladies toilet has been nabbed.
Santhosh (22), resident of Sullia is the arrested. On August 24 this year, Santhosh placed a video recording mobile phone attached to a battery pack in the Mangalore University ladies’ room. Ever since the device was recovered, the police have been investigating on this case and it had even reached the forensics department in Bengaluru.
Around 82 suspects were interrogated and the police narrowed down to one suspect through a series of selective elimination. There were many minute observations like footages of the shops from which he got his handset and power-bank were inspected and the culprit’s style of walking, dressing was analyzed to zero in on Santhosh.
The Konaje police team which investigated into the issue ran a series of interrogations and got the required information. As a token of appreciation from the Mangaluru police, the Commissioner of Police awarded Rs 10,000 to the Konaje team and Rs. 5000 to Shivaprasad K, the constable who worked with dedication in matching the photographs and CCTV footages.
DCP Shantharaju, south ACP Shruthi, Konaje inspector Ashok, constable Shivaprasad K worked along with the assistance of Sukalatha, Manjunath, Santhos and Durgaprasad.
“There is no exact reason why the culprit has done something like this. It is pretty clear that there is something terribly wrong with his mentality. Santhosh had gone to the university early in the morning and placed the device in the science department ladies’ toilet,” said Chandra Sekhar.
The attention to the details retrieved from the footage which showed the peculiar mannerisms of walking, dressing style and others had helped the police department to nab the culprit. Investigative agency made use of GAIT technique that analyzes various gestures and attitude of people.
As of now only one person has been convicted, there may be others who aided Santhosh in the shameful act.
