Numerous infrastructural projects will be launched as part of the New Mangalore Port’s golden jubilee festivities, according to NMPA chairman AV Ramana. He stated that the infrastructure projects would be officially launched in January 2025 by either the President or the Prime Minister during a workshop on maritime challenges that was held here on Monday.
The modernization of KK Gate, the addition of radio frequency identification (RFID) for vehicle scanning, and the four-laning of the road between KK Gate and NH-66 are among the projects.
According to him, all of the development work will be finished by December 2024, adding significance to the festivities. According to him, the NMPA handled 45.7 MMT of cargo in 2023–24 compared to 41.4 MMT in 2022–23, representing a 10.3% increase. In 2023–24, the NMPA generated a net surplus of Rs 551 crore, while its operating income was Rs 833 crore, compared to Rs 743 crore in 2022–23.
With the completion of road connectivity across the Ghats, the NMPA chairman hopes to cross 50 MMT of cargo in 2024–2025 by attaining an operational ratio of 34.5% during the year. Compared to 1,293 vessels in 2022–2023 and 1,476 vessels handled by the port. Container traffic increased over the year; in 2023–24, the port handled 1,96,424 TEUs, compared to 1,65,515 TEUs in 2022–23. The NMP can accommodate 60 to 70 MMT of cargo once the road connection to the port is converted to an all-season route.
During the fiscal year, 277 cargo boats were handled by the port. An estimated 7,000 to 8,000 foreign visitors come each year thanks to the passenger cruise ships handled by NMPA, which helps the village’s local businesses. According to Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP, the growth of the port would thereafter contribute to the expansion of the local economy.
