Mangalore: Jeevanadi Netravathi Rakshana  Samithi  in association with various like-minded organisations has given a call for Dakshina Kannada district bundh on March 3  to oppose the implementation of the Netravathi River Diversion and Yettinahole  Project.

Informing this to reporters here,  Vijaykumar Shetty, President of the Samithi said the various protests organised across the district in the recent past, have failed to evoke any positive response. Even the  political leaders have failed to  pressurise the government to either drop the project or to seek the opinion of the  project.

Now with the state government deciding to lay the foundation for this project at Chikkaballapura on March 3, Dakshina Kannada district will consider  it as a Black Day by observing a bundh, Shetty informed.

He said the selfish politicians were hell bent upon destroying the Western Ghats region which is a biological hotspot. He said in reality Netravathi diversion project  is not a drinking water supply project  but aims at supplying water to industries at Chikkaballapura, Bangalore, Tumkur and other places.

He said the agitation against the project will be intensified in the days to come.

MG Hegde who also spoke, said the  movement will not stop until the project is shelved.
