Nabbed ASI Aithappa attackers wanted in multiple cases including rape

Mangaluru: Police Commissioner Chandrasekhar confirmed on Friday, the arrest of two accused in Urwa ASI Aithappa assault case.

Addressing media persons here, he said, “Special investigation teams have succeeded in nabbing accused Shamir and Mohammed Niyaz, both from Katipalla. The accused in Urwa police attack were arrested from Pumpwell at around 8 pm.”

Chandrasekhar disclosed that Shameer has 9 pending cases in the Konaje, Barke, Mulki and Suratkal police station limits related to attempt to murder,
assault on public servant, rape among others.

Another accused Niyaz also has five pending cases in Bantwal, Karkala, Surathkal, Konaje and Shivamogga police stations, he added. “As both are hardcore criminals and habitual offenders, to collect sufficient information, we will seek their police custody after producing them before the court. I have directed a thorough probe into the matter. Whoever is involved in the case will not be spared. My colleague, brother and officer, moreover a policemen was attacked and we will ensure that take this case is brought to a logical conclusion.

I have permitted police personnel on night patrolling to use their weapons in situations demanding self-defence. Law permits us to use force when necessary. In the coming days it will be made mandatory for two armed police personnel to do night patrolling.”

Answering a query on alleged police harassment on Ahmed Qureshi, an accused in the attempt to murder case, he said, “DCP crime is been assigned to investigate on the allegation on police. Though Qureshi’s family claims that due to police assault Qureshi has suffered kidney damage, it will only be revealed once the medical report is out”, he said.

On threat to journalists on social media by the extremists, Commissioner said that he would write to the Ministry of Information Technology about the Supreme Court order.
