Udupi : In an interactive session with the media persons, Jayaprakash Hegde, MP, Udupi- Chikmagalur constituency, said that the basic foundation of the democratic set up is unity in diversity.”We fight over small  issues but when it comes to nation we are together. This is the success of the ideology of democracy,” he said on February 28,Friday.

At the same time, Hegde said ” The sorry state of affairs in a democracy is to see  regional parties pegging the political mileage through their coalition with other political parties to form the government..”

Two important groups  namely political leaders and media, both who work for the public, are responsible  for the better functioning of the democratic system, he said.
He stressed that MPs and MLA should not intervene in the administration  of local bodies like Zilla Panchayats and Taluk Panchayats.

Increasing number of regional parties create problems and affect  the administration, he observed and added that people should be educated about their rights. However they should know there responsibility towards the society for a democratic system to be effective, Hegde further added. Hegde strongly felt that candidates  should be elected based  on personal ability  and not on the basis of their party.
