Moodbidri : A vehicle of cattle thieves met with an accident at Sampige Cross near here on April 24, Wednesday.  The  speeding vehicle, in a bid to escape from the people, hit a roadside tree  and then fell into a ditch.

The miscreants later fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle. Sources said they had first lifted a grazing cattle and crammed it inside the vehicle. They were spotted when they were trying to steal another cattle and then fled the scene for fear of getting caught. However, in the process their vehicle met with an accident.  Earlier, some youth who chased the vehicle in their motorbikes even  tried to intercept it near Murkot Phalke but of no avail. Finally the miscreants fled after wielding weapons at the locals.

On March 28, as  many as four cattle belonging to one Faustin Sequeira had been stolen by some thieves. Later on, another cow which was given to Sequeira by one Dhanakeerthi Baliga too was stolen.

Locals say their complaints with the authorities to end cattle smuggling, have been of no avail.
