Minor molested in bus: Shirva bandh today

Udupi: The residents of Shirva and members of various Hindu organizations have called for a bandh in the town of Shirva on Monday January 20, after a man was arrested for allegedly trying to molest a minor girl on Sunday January 19.

A minor girl who was travelling in a bus plying towards Shirva on Sunday night was allegedly molested by a man who sat next to her.

The accused has been identified as 56-year-old Shami Abdul Khader who was arrested after the girl filed a complaint in Shirva police station with the help of the locals.

Following the incident, locals and members of Hindu organizations gathered and protested in front of Shirva police station on Sunday night and demanded strict action against the accused.

A bandh was called on Monday January 20 by locals and Hindu organizations in protest  against the incident. A meeting has also been convened today to sort out the issue.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, PSI Shirva said that the accused Shammi Abdul Khadar has been arrested under IPC Section 354(A) and will be in judicial custody until February 3.

It is learnt that the protest and the bandh was called-out under the leadership of Giridhar Prabhu which will continue till 6 in the evening, the shops of Muttar and Moodubelle were also made to shut down by the agitators.

Tension prevailed in the town while hundreds of policemen have been deployed in Shirva and security has been heightened to avoid problematic occurrence.
