Mangaluru: Doctors often bring hope into our lives- hope of well-being and good health. Living by this, the K.S.Hegde Medical Academy ( KSHEMA) students brought smiles on the faces of several needy by distributing clothes and other useful commodities.
The medicos collected over 500 kgs of clothes and other commodities, under their movement called ‘Mission Hope’ with a slogan “ All that belongs to me is yours”.
All of the collectibles were put together in just a week and soon, the medicos were seen distributing the commodities in Snehalaya Ashram in Uppala, Mangala Seva child care Centre in Kuttar. The remaining commodities were given away to laborers working on the KSHEMA campus. The student union members spent an entire day at the Ashram by interacting with the inmates and analyzing their problems.
Around 30 medicos took up the mantle and were ably supported by other medicos as well as students from Fr. Muller’s medical college. The team received extensive support from Dr.Rachana and Dr.Siddarth Shetty who motivated the medicos in their ‘Mission Hope’ movement.
It was a rare sight to witness the enthusiasm exhibited by medicos in collection as well as distribution of items. It is common feature among the few medical students to lead a luxurious life turning a blind eye to the societal needs, but this movement caught critics on the wrong foot.
Based on the instructions by the Nitte University Vice Chancellor and the Dean the mission hope movement was launched on 16th April. Collection boxes were kept at important locations within the campus and the distribution of the balance items took place in K.S.Hegde Auditorium.
This unique gesture by the medicos during their years of study has drawn wide appreciation from general public.
During the distribution, Nitte University Vice chancellor Dr. Ramanand Shetty said, it’s a very healthy trend to develop these good habits during study years as it will help the medicos to understand the pulse of patients and the needy in later stages of life and will enable them to serve the society in a selfless manner when they graduate.
Presiding the function the dean of KSHEMA Dr. Satish Kumar Bhandary said, the amount of Rs 1.5 lacs raised for cancer awareness from college staff and students will be routed through ‘Mission Hope’ so that it reaches the patients in need.
Non-clinical vice dean Amruth Mirajkar, KSHEMA Vice Chancellor Dr.Jayaprakash Sheety, Junaid Anwar, Deepu Suresh,Abhijit Shankar, Pallavi Mahender, Ajeesh George , Aishwarya Girish and Indu Kurup from ‘Mission hope’ were part of the memorable event held on Saturday the 4th June .
