Mangalore:The Labour Court in Mumbai which has rejected the claims of Air India that the case of Captain Zlatko Glusica, the pilot of the ill-fated Air India Express Boeing 737 that crashed in Mangalore on May 22, 2010, could not be considered for compensation, has said that Air India will have to pay a compensation of around Rs 8 crore to the family of the pilot.
The Air India had earlier argued that as Capt. Glusica was not an Indian his family was not liable to get compensation. The Court has now directed Air India to deposit $ 7.45 lakh which is Rs 4.63 crore approximately as per the workmen compensation package. The court has also directed Air India to pay 50 per cent of the compensation amount as penalty for delayed payment and also an interest of 12 per cent per annum from the date of accident till the date of depositing the compensation amount.
The family of the Captain had moved the Labour Court after Air India ignored its requests for compensation. The workmen compensation is based on the pilot’s age and salary. The deceased Capt. Glusica was 55 years old and was drawing a salary of $11,000 per month.
It may be recalled here that the inquiry committee report on the air crash which was made public two years after the tragedy, had blamed the Pilot of Serbian origin for the crash.
