Mangalore city police clarifies on Deralakatte incident

Mangalore: The Deralakatte incident wherein two students were allegedly kidnapped, forced into having sex, video-graphed and blackmailed has created a tremendous outrage among the citizens and various organizations.

Dakshina Kannada also witnessed widespread protests by various organizations and  allegations were also heard that the police has failed to register a rape case against the accused.

In this backdrop, the Mangalore city police on Sunday January 5 issued a clarification.

“Konaje police station crime number 192/2013 was registered on December 19, 2013 based on the written complaint by the victim. At the time of receiving the complaint the police officer concerned suspected the involvement of section 376 IPC (pertaining to rape) and questioned the complainant denied the same.When the complainant was requested by the officer for a medical test she denied and got sensitive over the case. Furthermore she did not co-operate and pleaded the investigation officer not to publicize the issue.Investigating the case the police launched an operation to track down the suspects wherein they were caught in 48 hours. All the accused are in judicial custody.”

The clarification also said that the statement of the victim was recorded under section 164 Cr PC (code of criminal procedure) before the magistrate. The investigating officer has filed a memo to the court to add section 376 and 376D IPC to the case on January 3 based on the few evidences they could gather and the video.

The police have also assured to file a charge sheet against the accused within the given time frame.
