Mangalore Bishop’s sister Miss Sophie D’Souza passes away

Mangalore : Miss Sophie D’Souza, a retired teacher  from Farla (Agrar) Parish, passed away on September 4, Wednesday at a private hospital in Mangalore. She was 75 and was ailing from cancer. Sophie who was popularly known as Sophie Teacher was the sister of Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese.

Sophie is also survived by her other siblings  Fr Charles D’Souza of Delhi Archdiocese;  Sr Janice A.C., Pune;  late Maxim D’Souza/Juliana;  Miss Celine M. D’Souza (Retd. Teacher) and Michael D’Souza.

She had served as a teacher at  Thodambila-Modankaup School, Agrar  School and headmistress of Farla School. In all she served as a teacher for over three decades.

She had even worked as a Panchayat Member  of Modankaup for one term. Miss Sophie was also the Secretary of Catholic Sabha  She also played an active role in forming women’s associations and such other social activities.

Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, the Bishop of Udupi, Most Rev. Dr Pius Thomas D’Souza, the Bishop of Ajmeer, Fr Pius D’Souza O.C.D. the Episcopal Vicar for Religious in the Diocese of Mangalore are her students.

The funeral procession will be held on September 5, Thursday at 3.30 pm from Hekkottu-Farla residence  of Miss Sophie. The funeral mass would be held at Our Lady of Vailankanni Church, Farla at 4 pm.
