Mangalore: The Union Government is trying its best to reduce the import of gold into the country and also has claimed that its efforts are paying off. But, that does not appear to be the case, at least in Mangalore International Airport.
As per the initial reports in the last few days, 34 kg of gold has been imported paying customs duty of Rs 95.2 lakh (an approximate Rs 2.80 lakh per kg) which is exceptional.

It is learnt that on November 23 and 24, one kg of gold each was imported, on November 25, 5 kg was imported that followed by 7 kg on the next day, 11 kg on Wednesday and 9 kg on Thursday, that has never been witnessed in airport’s history.

The imported gold was in the form of bars and the passengers brought one kg yellow metal with them as permitted under rules. The inexplicable issue is that not even one of the persons who brought gold is an affluent person. The officials said, “They are mainly waiters, painters, salesmen and people with odd jobs in Dubai.” The total seizure of smuggled gold from these three airports in the last one and a half month was a staggering 100 kg.

The officials feel that as the smuggling has become difficult, the importers might be deploying carriers to meet their gold demand.
