Mangalore: The Mahila Daurjanya Virodhi Vedike organized a silent protest at Hampankatte, near the University College on Saturday March 29.

The protest “Women in Black” displayed unvoiced women and men along with few children protesting in Black attire. They urged and questioned the Lok Sabha Candidates from the district on the measures they will take for the safety of the women if they will win the elections.

With regards to the atrocities on women implementation of strict laws and appointment of able officers to deal with these violent cases is required, the agitators stated.

The protest also demanded to make education for girls mandatory, to make public places women friendly, to put an end to moral policing, to strength the women’s commission, to make arrangements for the safety of Senior citizens, fast track court for cases of atrocities on women and other such issue must to segregated and dealt in a better manner.

The protest also agitated over the issue of implementing PCPIR (Mangalore Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region) plan in the district.

Karnataka had been eyeing the project since 2007, but dropped the idea in 2010 after mass protests and oppositions here.

However recently in a press meet Congress candidate from DK Lok Sabha constituency, B Janardhana Poojary was heard saying that PCPIR plan will be scrapped; if people do not want the plan to be implemented it will not be executed, he had stated bringing up lot of criticism.
