Mangaluru: As many as 49,946 cases were disposed of during the national Lok Adalat organized from September 1 to December in the district.
Principal district and sessions court judge M.G Uma told reporters on Saturday that the Lok Adalat, which aimed at reducing burden on courts bogged down with huge pendening cases were solved by reaching an amicable settlement.

As the adalat was held for 90 days, a whopping number of 49,946 cases were disposed of, she said.
Of them, 37,854 related to traffic violation such as jumping signals and now wearing helmets. “These cases generally turn into criminal cases that have to be closed after the accused pays fine. All such case were brought before the Lok Adalat and were closed after accepting the fine, she said.
Among other pre-litigation cases settled included 2,909 cases pending before tahashildars, assistant commissioners and deputy commissioners, 559 cases related to non-payment of loans, 476 related to municipalities and 407 related to telecom firms. Of the 432 bounced cheque cases, one person agreed to pay Rs 37 lakh in the case.
‘Janata court’
Judge Uma M.G also said that janata court will be held at the district court complex twice in a week from now onwards, which is every Friday and Saturday. “It is to solve the cases through mediation”, she said.
‘Victim compensation scheme’
The Judge said that the district Legal Services Authority has decided to provide an amount of Rs 2 lakhs as compensation for victims under the government’s compensation scheme. The compensation will be given to a woman who has lost her husband in a murder at Ekkar in Bajpe and is survived by her two kids.
