Udupi : The Police Department is seriously considering the proposal to introduce compulsory driver display system or licence display system in autorickshaws in order to instill confidence in passengers boarding autorickshaws. Here it is worth mentioning that the recent gang rape of a medical student of Manipal University by three autorickshaw bound assailants has brought in a sense of insecurity and fear among people particularly young women while boarding an autorickshaw while alone.
The Police Department feels measures like licence display system or driver display system would also reduce incidences of harassment of passengers by autorickshaw drivers. Moreover, a passenger who boards an autorickshaw will also feel secure as he or she will have complete details of the driver, his vehicle registration, address etc in the display system in front of him as the same can be noted down in case a complaint need to be lodged.
The Bangalore Traffic Police have already introduced such a system effectively. Meanwhile, police are also planning to provide a unique code system to track auto drivers. The police department in Udupi will conduct a feasibility study before implementing these measures.
