Mangalore: The Department of Botany and Biotechnology of St Aloysius College conducted a two day UGC sponsored national seminar on “Trends in environmental biotechnology and its application” under the star college scheme on Tuesday December 10, at Eric Mathias Hall of the College
Dr TV Ramachandran, senior scientific officer IISC at Bangalore, the chief guest of the seminar spoke on the importance of preserving the environment and the role of bio technology in effective waste management. Citing the example of the role of biotechnology in effective waste management he said, “All of the solid waste in Bangalore that was currently dumped should be recycled to get manure which can be used for the land. Let us learn from nature how to live our lives.”
Further speaking on preserving our immediate environment he said, “I had an opportunity to work in heaven and that is the Western Ghats. Even students should go to the forest for a couple of days and explore nature.”
Fr Swebert D’Silva SJ, the college Principal presided over the programme. Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, Rector and Dr. A M Narahari, Registrar, SAC were present as chief guests.
A book titled “The book of abstract” by Dr Shashi Kiran and Aleefa was released by the chief guest. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by ML Suresh Nath, Organizing Secretary of the seminar.
