Kasaragod: The ladies hostel of Kasaragod Government College which was inaugurated two months ago is to yet start functioning.

The hostel was inaugurated during the assembly elections. It has not started functioning due to technical reasons. None of the officials are giving a positive response. The building is not even registered in the city corporation. There is no electricity and water facility.
The students who will begin the new academic year will need the hostel. It would be very expensive for the students to stay at paying guests or rented rooms. There are many graduates and post-graduate students who are in need of hostel facilities in the region.
There are a lot of non-local students in the area who study BSc Botany, Geology, Chemistry, BA Malayalam, BA Economics, BA in English, MSc Biology, BA Kannada, BA History, MA Kannada, MA Economics, MA Arabic, English MA, MS in Mathematics and MS in Chemistry. Not even 25 per cent of the present number of students can be accommodated in the old hostel.
The construction of the hostel began a year and half ago. UGC and the State government jointly funded the cause. The state government contributed Rs one crore and UGC provided Rs 80 lakh for the construction. There are as many as 37 rooms in the building which can accommodate around 80 students.
With the basic facilities missing in the hostel and only the inauguration completed, the students for the new academic year will have to wait till the things are set right.
