Mangaluru: Mangaluru which is facing water scarcity is likely to get water from Kudremukh Lakya dam. Mayor Harinath and his team visited Lakya dam and assessed the conditions on May 9.

It is said that the water level in Lakya dam which is owned by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL) is enough to satisfy the thirst of some of the areas of Mangaluru.
Mayor Harinath said that, there is a provision to pump water from the dam, since Mangaluru is facing severe water crisis. The pumped water is enough to satisfy the drinking water requirements of Panambur and Suratkal areas.
Congressman Shashidhar Hegde said that, it is planned to pump water to Panambur from Lakya dam. From Panambur the water will be supplied to various areas.
MLA Mohiuddin Bava said that, he had a discussion with the Chairman of KIOCL, Malay Chatterjee who agreed to pump 0.5 MGD water from Lakya dam to Panambur KIOCL plant. From there the water will be pumped to MCC pump house at Panambur.
“The Supreme Court has restricted to use the Lakya dam water for KIOCL, but there is no problem in pumping the water for drinking purpose as Mangaluru is facing drought-like situation,” he said.
Chairman of standing committee of the city corporation on town planning, Lancelot Pinto, Corporator, Muhammed, city corporation commissioner Dr H N Gopalakrishna and others accompanied the Mayor.
