Mangaluru: After nearly two months of being forced to look out for alternate accomodations due to the pathetic conditions at the Karnataka Polytechnic (Government) College hostel forcing the authorities to undertake renovation works, the first block is finally expected to start functioning by this month-end.
Constructed in 1943, the hostel houses 60 students. However, owing to the renovation undertaken at the hostel these students were compelled to stay in PGs and rented accommodations in the city after the the start of the academic year from July.
It is learnt that Government first sanctioned Rs. 85.9 lakh and then Rs. 4 lakh.
During his visit to the hostel, MLC Ivan D’Souza told media that renovated block and the evening polytechnic will be inaugurated by month-end. “Government would sanction grants for renovation of the second block and put in all efforts to restore glory of Karnataka Polytechnic,” he added.
It is also studied that the plumbing work has been completed and the electrical work was under way at the renovated building.
Polytechnic Principal Babu Devadiga informed that since the college doesn’t have any grants for cook and housekeeping staffs in the renovated block the students will have to share the cost of the cook and housekeeping staff.
In regard to this, Ivan said that he would write to State government to sanction the funds.
