Karkala’s Balavana shrinks to help a pvt school

Karkala : The Balavana Park  adjacent to the Gandhi Maidan in the town, has  shrunk, thanks to the lackadaisical approach of the TMC which is more interested in  helping a private school. The Balavana has been re-constructed  in such a way that it endangers the lives of the students, while also has  left the TMC treasury poorer by Rs 2.6 lakhs.

The argument of the public is that this was nothing but a ploy to systematically sell  the Balavana resources worth several lakhs of rupees. Sources  also say the TMC has only misused Rs 2.6 lakhs on the pretext of development of the park and raising a compound wall and  stone slabs. 

The Park was first constructed during the tenure of Rudregowda who was the then TMC Chief Officer, with the help of the Gandhi Maidan Friends Club. TMC records also say that businessmen Sudhir Puranik and Vinay Puranik had  spent lakhs to provide infrastructure to the park. But the irony is that the TMC had always failed to maintain the park. It has now kicked off a controversy by reducing the park area from the earlier four cents to three cents and providing the remaining one cent  as approach way to the school.

The beneficiary Christ King School  has a Congress leader as its office bearer. Moreover, with   even the TMC administration  under the Congress, the issue is likely to kick off a controversy. The school has no playground and the students use the nearby Gandhi Maidan to play.

Dangerous compound wall: The compound wall of the  Balavana too has been constructed in a dangerous way with the  iron rods having sharp triangular shaped edges. In the event any student chooses  to climb the three feet high compound wall then his or her life will surely be in danger.

 Meanwhile, local councillor Akshay who defends the TMC says the TMC has taken such a move in the interest of the public as the   school buses found it difficult to take a turn here.

TMC Chief Officer Mabel D’Souza said she was unaware that the compound wall of Balavana has been raised dangerously. She has also assured to look into the matter and do the needful.
