Bangalore: In a joint operation by police from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, history-sheeter Kunigal Giri was arrested in Hindupur along with his associates Govinda, Jadagish and Vasu , while one of them was shot in an encounter here on Sunday morning May 19.

A gangster who attempted to flee from police was injured after the latter opened fire at him. The police sub-inspector also sustained injuries in the incident. The accused attacked the policemen with stones, injuring an inspector, who retaliated fired at Govind’s leg.
Around 88 crime cases of various nature have been booked against Kunigal Giri’s gang, said the police.
The Bangalore city police had nabbed nine members of the gang last month. However, the kingpin Kunigal Giri had been absconding.
The Hindupur police arrested a person on Saturday night in connection with a road accident at Parigi bus stand in Hindupur town. On finding a pistol and two live rounds in his possession, the police took him for interrogation.
Subsequently, the police raided a house of Krupakar Reddy in Sadashiva Nagar in Hindupur where they arrested three more people, allegedly belonging to a dacoit group involved in tens of dacoities in the Andhra-Karnataka border areas.
A team of policemen from Karnataka, which had been to Hindupur, chased Giri after receiving a tip-off. However, he met with an accident and fell off the motorcycle. The police found a pistol with him took him into custody and admitted him to a hospital for treatment.
Based on the information given by Giri, the police from both the States raided a house in Hindupur and nabbed three of his associates. When they were being brought to Bangalore, one of them Govind tried to escape near Doddaballapur, police claimed.
The accused attacked the policemen with stones, injuring an inspector, who retaliated by firing at Govind’s leg in self-defence. Govind was then overpowered and taken into custody.
While Kunigal Giri is in a hospital in Hindupur, Govind has been admitted to Columbia Asia Hospital here in the city. The police have booked all the four suspects under The Arms Act.
