Mangalore:Kannada Rajyotsava was celebrated with fervour at the Nehru Maidan in Mangalore on November 1, Friday. DK District in-charge Minister and State Minister for Forest and Ecology B Ramanatha Rai hoisted the national tricolor and received the guard of honour on the occasion.
In his address, Rai highlighted the various measures taken up by the State Government to promote Kannada language. He also spoke on the developmental programmes initiated by the state government with the aim of the overall development of the district.
Deputy Commissioner N Prakash, ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni, MCC Commissioner Ajith Kumar, IGP Western Range Pratap Reddy, Mangalore Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar, Legislators JR Lobo, Moidin Bava, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura were among others present at the function.
The District level Rajyotsava Awards were conferred on 20 eminent personalities on the occasion. Those who received the Awards are : Literature : Bola Chittaranjan Das Shetty, B L Nagaraj and ‘Shanthi Prakashana’ (publishing house); Music : Harry D’Souza of Harry’s ‘Silver Band’, Fine Arts : Suresh Attavar; Yakshagana : Leelavathi Baipadithaya; Folklore : Dayanand Kattal and Annu Paravan; Agriculture : Dr D C Chowta; Theatre : Dinesh Attavar; Media : P B Harish Rai and Harish; Social Service : Elias Sanctis; Cinema : Aravind Bolar; Art Patronage : Vijayanath Vittal Shetty; Classical Music : Prakash Devadiga ; Organisations : Maruthi Yuvaka Mandala (Ullal); Kannada service : Dr Annayya Kulal; Environment : Madhava Ullal: Education : Umesh Rao Yekkur.
The programmes also featured a colourful parade and variety of cultural programmes by school children. A procession of Kannada Bhuvaneshwari was taken out from Ambedkar Circle to Nehru Maidan prior to the formal function.
