Mangalore : DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai has stressed the need to conserve the rich bio diversity of islands.



He was speaking after inaugurating a programme on ‘Bio-Diversity of Islands” to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity organized at the Netravathi Auditorium of Zilla Panchayat on Thursday May 22. Islands are a treasure trove of rich bio-diversity, he said and emphasized the need to create an awareness in this regard.
Though activities which harm nature are banned in islands, still the rules are violated, he regretted. He also said programmes which educate the people on the rich bio-diversity of islands need to be organized.
RK Singh, Member of the State Bio-Diversity Board, said the Netrani island has seen much development ever since it was officially declared as a Bio-Diversity Spot by the Government a year ago. Stating that there is precious bio-diversity even in Sharavathi river valley, Singh said measures have to be taken to conserve the same.
Professors of fisheries college and representatives of NGOs participated in the programme.
