Mangaluru: Friday is an auspicious day as many go to temples, mosques and churches. However, discomforting silence engulfed the houses of the five victims of the gruesome serial road accident that took place on June 10 at Valacchil involving container, a car and an auto.

During the holy month of Ramadan, as every evening brings in union of family members for prayers, get together, lavish dinners and gala time chatting with one another, the Ifthaar and the upcoming festival will always have a void in the houses of the victims of the said mishap.
The June 10 mishap wrecked several homes. The victims were all young and were all hailing from poor families. They were either the hands that fed their families or were individuals on whom their families had pinned a lot of hopes.
Who were they?
Nazeer, aged 30, seventh of the eleven siblings was married only three-months-ago. He was an auto driver by profession and was known for his honesty in the region.
Mohammad Salam, aged 22, resident of Nandvara was a painter by profession and was a die-hard cricket fan. Just a few minutes before the mishap, Salam had gone to get his father’s mobile recharged and he had even called his father up to confirm if the recharge was done.
Sinan was all of 16 and had joined a local school 10 days ago. He had alighted the bus and had boarded an auto to reach home when the tragedy struck.
Mohammad Unais, 20, resident of Beerpugudde in Adyar and an electrician by profession was living with his aunt in Valacchil. He had dropped his sister at Valachil for her to take part in Iftaar dinner, and was walking towards his house when the tragedy laid him down numb.
Abbas, 48, a resident of Vitla was a cloth merchant by profession and was returning to his home town in ill-fated car that was run over by the container. He is survived by 2 sons and a daughter and the grieving family looked helpless as he was the only breadwinner.
Among the dead Nazeer and Salam were friends.
Thasildar of Bantwal along with his staff met the relatives of the deceased and consoled them.
Did mobile phone cause the accident?
According to Salam’s friends and relatives the container driver was busy talking on his cell phone. As the truck neared Yashswi hall on Mangaluru-Bantwal highway, the cell phone fell off his hand and in the process of picking up the cell phone he lost control. At that moment he was trying to evade the sharp curve and container truck hit the road divider and went over killing five and injuring the rest who were travelling in the car and auto respectively.
