Puttur: In a case that created uproar in the city, Fernard Monteiro who was accused of murdering his wife was convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder by the fifth additional district and sessions court in Puttur on Wednesday. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on December 10.
According to reports, Fernard, a resident of Kapinabagilu bought pork meat on June 6 in 2013 and told his wife Rosalina Lobo to cook the same.
Rosalina who was engaged in other household chores at the time, told her husband that she would get to it shortly. Angered at this, Fernard is said to have picked up a sickle and injured her on the head. When Rosalina tried to get out of the house after having grabbed the sickle Fernard poured kerosene on her and tried to burn her. Rosalina who was injured in the act was admitted to hospital in Mangaluru and died on June 11 in 2013.Fernard was arrested on July 11 the same year by Uppinangadi police and a charge sheet was filed subsequently by then circle inspector of rural police station Suresh Kumar.
In the trial held at the Sessions court, the judge came to a verdict that Fernard was responsible for the death of his wife. The court decided that it was a culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Udaya kumar was the public prosecutor.
