Mangalore:Dreaded criminal Rashid Malbari who is behind bars in an illegal arms possession case, has been granted interim bail by the High Court. Rashid’s lawyer had earlier moved the High Court challenging the ruling of the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court which had sentenced him and Mohammad Hashim to five years of prison in the illegal arms case.
Rashid’s advocate Purushottam Poojari had argued in the court that the maximum punishment in the illegal arms possession case was three years but the district court had sentenced Malbari to five years imprisonment apart from a penalty of Rs 10,000.
Though Malbari has been granted bail,he will continue to remain behind bars as he is facing several other charges. The DCIB sleuths led by Inspector Venkatesh Prasanna nabbed Malbari and his aides at Chattanchal in Kasargod on March 29, 2009. Along with Malbari, Ibu alias Ibrahim, Mohammad Hashim and Sayaf were also arrested. A 9 mm pistol and other ammunitions had also been seized from them.
