Gold hidden in LED lights, underwear seized; 3 arrested

Mangalore: Three smuggling attempt cases through the Mangalore International Airport were foiled by the Customs officials at the airport on February 22, Saturday. Three persons including a woman have been arrested. Interestingly, two of the male passengers who were caught were hiding gold in their underwear, while the lady passenger was in possession of gold which was concealed in an emergency light and rechargeable LED flash light. The value of the seized gold is Rs 43,38,915. It weighed 1399.650 grams.

In the first case of smuggling attempt detected at the airport on Saturday, a lady passenger named Mehazabin Rumana from Katipalla near Suratkal was detained.  As many as 10 gold pieces valued at Rs 28,92,734 and  weighing 933.140 grams were seized from her. She had arrived by a Jet Airways flight from Dubai at 5.30 am. She has been produced before the  magistrate and remanded to judicial custody till February 24.

In another case, a passenger  hailing from Chengala in Kasargod who has been identified as Ahmed Kabeer Moidin Kunhi was caught smuggling gold in his underwear.  Six gold pieces weighing 233.250 grams and valued at Rs 7,23,075 were seized from him.  In yet another  case, Hassainar Kombanadukkam Ismail from Chemnad, Kasargod was arrested  for trying to smuggle gold in his underwear He had six pieces of gold weighing 233.260 grams and valued at Rs 7,23,106. Both had arrived by Air India Express flight from Dubai at 7.30 am.
