Bantwal : A demonstration on fishing was held in the fresh water fish farming pond in the land belonging to progressive farmer John Veigas at Chelur in Bantwal taluk on Wednesday July 30.







Dr Ramachandra Naik, Assistant Professor in Fisheries College, Mangalore was the resource person.
Katla, Rohu and other fish varieties in the pond, were caught in net and sold on the spot.
Speaking to reporters later, Dr Ramachandra Naik said people of the coastal region relied on sea fish itself and added fresh water fish farming will make fish available even during monsoon when there is a fishing ban.
He said the Fisheries College provided training to those interested in fresh water fishing which can be profitable. He also stated that fresh water fish are much in demand.
John Veigas also admitted that the fish reared in his pond spread over half an acre has great demand and that he gets a yield of over 2 quintal at a time.
