Press Release: Under the initiation taken by St Aloysius College (Autonomous), they have been granted ‘Community College’ status for the present academic year (2013-14) by UGC on the recommendation of the state government.
The last date for joining has been extended till November 30, 2013. Classes will be held between 5 pm and 7 pm on weekdays: Monday to Friday
Explaining the requirements of a Community college Fr Swebert D’silva SJ, Principal, St Aloysius College said, “The present-day approach of educational institutions is to impart knowledge. We have taken up the task of skilling the youth of Mangalore and making them industry ready. Training, skill development and industry interface are the highlights of the course. We have tied-up with corporate and industry to bridge the skill gap that exists and makes the students industry ready.”
“The course aims to educate those who are deprived of education after PU. This unique course provides a second chance for the drop outs and unemployed to pursue higher education that guarantees job and an adequate amount of stipend when one is studying. A conglomerate of the academia, government and the industry, mainly trains the deprived on the latest requirements of the industry”, he added.
Dr Lourdusamy, the course coordinator said, “The community college aims to help the school drop outs, the classes are also conducted at convenient timings. We will work with industry and business establishments from the local area to develop skills of the students to face challenges of the industry.”
An applicant, who has just completed his PU and is not able to continue his studies as he has to support his family financially, said “I was unable to study further as I could not afford to study. But this course has no fee at all and is also a skill based course. This is also convenient as I can earn and learn.”
The program will be administered in three stages – certificate, diploma and an associate degree. Certificate and diploma courses will have 6 months duration each and the associate degree will have duration of one year.
About the “Community College”
The Community college currently offers two certificate programs – Travel and Tourism and Computer Animation and Networking. The principal of the College has appealed to all those who are seeking jobs and who cannot pursue higher education to make use of this unique opportunity. There is no age bar to join community colleges. The scheme helps one get education along with hands-on industry experience.
