Fr Muller doctors perform ‘Covered Stent Implantation’ procedure

Mangalore : A team of doctors of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore have granted a new lease of life to a 71 year old patient from Kannur who was suffering from a very rare disorder,  by performing a very risky and complicated life saving procedure. The unique procedure called ‘Covered Stent Implantation’ without opening the thorax lasted for  24 hours.

The patient named Chandran who had undergone a cardiac bypass surgery 10 years ago was admitted to ICU of the hospital in a very critical condition with weakness and breathlessness since one month and was referred to Chief Interventional Cardiologist Dr. H. Prabhakar.

On detailed clinical examination, it came to light that the patient was suffering from aneurysmal dilatation of the main blood vessel (aorta) resulting in impaired blood circulation to thorax abdomen and lower limbs which indicated large dilatation of the aorta which was on the verge of rupture and was life threatening. The patient had needed immediate surgery which was the only option despite complications and risk to the life of the patient. Doctors say  the disorder named Aortic aneurysm is seen in 5.9 cases per 100,000 persons.

A team of specialists  headed by Dr. Prabhakar, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Sayyid M.K, Cardiologist and Dr. Anand K.T., Cardio Thoracic Surgeon successfully performed the unique procedure called ‘Covered Stent Implantation.’ The patient responded to the procedure and is recovering speedily and most likely to be discharged very soon, a press release from the hospital said.

Rev. Fr. Richard Coelho, Administrator Father Muller Medical College has informed that the hospital is fully equipped with ultra modern equipment to handle all types of complicated heart problems. Rev. Fr. Patrick Rodrigues, Director has congratulated the team of doctors for performing the rare successful surgery and saving the life of a  poor patient.  He added that Father Muller Hospital is committed to treat needy and poor people at economical cost for any type of heart disease.
