Mangalore: The city witnessed a flash protest by autorickshaw drivers near the Muttappan Temple close by the Railway Colony on May 24, Friday evening, when the windshield of an autorickshaw broke accidentally at the hands of a traffic police man.
The incident took place when an autorickshaw driver named Moidin was taking a few passengers to the railway station in his autorickshaw.
As the auto reached close by the Muttappan Temple, a traffic cop stopped it. Even as the passengers were alighting, the traffic cop waved his lathi which touched the windshield and broke.
As news spread autorickshaw drivers gathered in large numbers and staged a lightning protest and demanded action against the traffic. Even Ivan DSouza, President of the Autorickshaw Drivers Union joined the protest and warned of severe protest if the auto was not repaired within three days. Inspector CN Diwaker who rushed to the spot assured to get the auto repaired and the strike was subsequently withdrawn.
