Mangalore: A pall of gloom descended the city on October 6, Sunday when news trickled in that as many as five boys drowned in the river at Baddodi Kudru near Tannirbavi. The bodies of four of the boys, all teenagers have been recovered so far.
The deceased have been identified as Prajwal, Kalandar, Rajesh, Rakshith and Yakshith. The body of Yakshith is yet to be recovered.
Reports said as many as eight youngsters were at the riverside on October 6, Sunday to practice Huli Vesha dance and had decided to have a bath after their practice.
Of the five deceased, three were students of Ganapathi High School in Mangalore. Rakshith, the son of late Digambar and Rajani of Kodialkatte was studying in tenth standard while Yakshith, son of Meena of the same area was in ninth standard. It is learnt the two were relatives.
Another deceased Prajwal also from Kodialkatte was a ninth standard student. Kalandar,the son of Hussain and worked as a labourer while Rajesh was the son of Ratnaker, a businessman.
It is learnt, the other three namely Jagadish Marimuthu and Prajwal managed to swim ashore. Kavoor police and fire service personnel were at the spot and helped in retrieving the bodies.
A large crowd had also gathered in the area.
