Fisheries minister inspects developmental work at Old Port

Mangalore: Abhaychandra Jain the state minister for fisheries visited Old port here on June 9. This inspection comes after a demand raised by Mohan Bengre, member of fishermen’ union.

Reports said that accumulation of sand raises the surface level under the water giving rise to more waves and this silt has been causing accidents. Also boatsmen find it difficult to steer towards the sea.

When asked about the stay order imposed by NGT to continue the final phase of extension work of fishing labour,the minister assured that he would discuss with the lawyer who is handling the case. He also assured that the stay order would be vacated.

He further said that while constructing the sea wall along the coast dredging between the river mouth and the fishing harbour also would be included with the help of the  Asian Development Bank.

He gave details about the key projects of the state govt, At a cost of Rs 5 crore under National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) an ideal berthing is to be set up in Bokkapatna in Sultan Batteri.And also state govt has plans to construct 90 mt fishing jetty at Ullal at a cost of Rs 5 crore.He also promised to provide quality fisheries roads and develope the area soon.

Jain handed over financial aid to economically backward families from the fishing community, at a formal function organized by the fisheries department.

Under Matsyashraya scheme (2012-2103) in which families are entitled to receive a sum of Rs 60,000 in three installments, the minister distributed third installment of Rs 25,000 to the families.

The minister also distributed free nets, insulators and life jackets to those involved in fishing.
