Bangalore: The fertility rate of women in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts is below the national level, says a survey conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore.

Udupi is well below the national average of 2.5 with just 1.2 and the fertility rate in Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu is 1.5. It is above the national average in Bijapur (3) and Bidar (7) and the rate is declined in Hassan, Mandya and Chikmagalur distrcts too. Compared to north India, the fertility rate is lower in south India, according to the survey.

Late marriage of working women and decision to have a single child are the reasons attributed for low birth rates in the coastal districts.

The population of the country has crossed 120 crore. Hence an average growth rate of 2 was expected. Two children of a parent were expected to continue the same pattern when they grew up.
