Exhaust fumes from certified state-run buses outdo industrial units

Puttur: The quantum of  exhaust fumes from state-run road transport buses beat out those of major industrial units and are fit to be lined up for elimination. However, what is surprising is the fact that these buses are plying on roads with state transport authorities  issuing emission compliance certificates.
Their excellent performance on roads has won awards for their depot. The profits gained through them have put the owners in quandary as they are not sure how to eliminate the old ‘war horses‘ from their fleet. For the moment the drivers, passengers and the ones who come in contact with the buses end up praying for their health, especially lungs. The intensity of exhaust fumes is so high, the number plates get covered totally when they move on the road and dangerous emission levels is a real cause for concern for all.

They are not few in number but aplenty, having covered more than 10 lakh kilometeres. The total number of 160 buses poses a serious problem in the depot which does not have the wherewithal to manage a fleet beyond 100.

Private vehicles when they exceed prescribed emission limits are fined heavily by the road transport authorities. Even the car manufacturers have to comply with  emission norms to keep pace with international standards. Sadly, here all the standards of emission norms are ignored. On the day of ‘trial’ they are dressed up to clear the parameters set by the transport authorities and soon after, situation is back to normal. The road transport officials issuing emission certificates are not bothered after that even if the fumes engulf them. The state transport authorities are not complaining because they are still milking old cows!

With no masks available to combat such emission, affected people are looking towards National green tribunal (NGT) for relief!
