Drunken driving will lead to cancellation of licenses in M’luru: SP

Mangaluru: Cases of drink and drive will henceforth cost the driver his license for a minimum of three months, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa informed on Friday January 8.

In addition, jumping of traffic signals, driving at speed exceeding limits, overload and carrying humans in goods carriages will also lead to cancellation of licenses, as per Section 19 of Motor Vehicles Act – Rule 21 under Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, he added. Stern action will also be taken against those using mobile phones and riding two-wheelers without head gears, he asserted.

The new rules will be implemented in ten days time by the district police in co-ordination with the RTO based on the Supreme Court guideline in view of reducing road accidents and enforcing traffic discipline, Dr Sharanappa said.

Action against Parents!

As cases of minors operating vehicles are on the rise, action will be taken against the parents and guardians concerned. Circulars will soon be issued to educational institutions to hold a meet with students, parents in the presence of a police personnel if required, to ensure that minors do not get vehicles to colleges. Procurement of fabricated documents including licenses will be considered as a serious offence, the SP said.

Providing statistics of road mishaps in urban DK, Dr Sharanappa said total accidents registered in 2015 are 950 out of which 152 were fatal. On an average, the urban part of the district records about 140-150 deaths every year.

Head gears for pillion riders mandatory

Speaking about the new rule by the State government to make helmets compulsory for pillion riders, Dr Sharanappa said that a grace period of 20 days is now in place and urged the public to obey the law. He said that pillion riders suffer as much as riders during casualties adding every police station in the district has been informed to be stern onensuring that all riders are equipped with head gears.
