Mangaluru: Acting on a tip-off, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mangaluru on Thursday January 14, intercepted a passenger at Mangalore International Airport and seized a huge quantity of foreign currency notes of different countries.

The accused is identified as Mohammed Aouf (28), a native of Bhatkal.

It is gathered that Aouf was caught while trying to smuggle foreign currency illegally to Dubai by Air India Flight IX 383.

The currencies seized include British Pounds, US Dollars, Euros, Australian Dollars, Saudi Riyals, UAE Dirhams, Qatar Riyals, Oman Riyals and Kuwait Dinars and is estimated at about Rs 81,67,000.

It is learnt that the accused has admitted to the crime. Further investigation is underway.
