Mangaluru: Even before people could recover from the incident where three labourers got killed, the recent downpour has put the lives of people staying nearby in danger as their houses are on the verge of collapse.

Houses belonging to Abusali, Zulaika and Siddique are facing imminent danger in Pudu gram panchayat limits, where three people had died due to landslides some time ago. The district administration officials who visited that spot after the incident assured the people in the surroundings of providing an alternative or finding a solution to counter the frequent landslides in the area. The affected residents allege that, the officials got the area covered with a large tarpaulin and have not appeared again to know the plight of the people who are in danger.
The recent downpour has caused more fear among the people in the area. Mud in small quantities is sliding down as the ground has softened due to rainfall.
The affected residents in the area are requesting the district administration officials not to vacate them from the area or provide them an alternative. Instead, they suggested that the higher officials take measures to punish the gram panchayat representatives and officials who did not carry out the works after the last landslide. According to them, the money allotted for the works has reached the pockets of local representatives and officials with no improvement in the situation.
Reacting on the land slide, Abusali, an affected resident said, “We are living between life and death. Those who assured us of providing an alternative accommodation have not resurfaced yet”.
However, the Tahsildar of Bantwal has said, “The local gram panchayat members have been asked to monitor the situation and if required, construct a retainer wall using the GP funds”.
