Mangaluru: Nearly 60 madrasas across seven districts of the state have preferred to impart Islamic education in the local language i.e Kannada rather than the original Malayalam or Arabic.
These madrasas, which are being run by the Karnataka Salafi Movement (KSM) in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga and Kodagu chose to opt for Kannada understanding the linguistic difficulty the children used to face in grasping the subject while they were taught in a foreign language, states a report in TOI.
These madrasas affiliated to the KSM began the entire transition process in 2010 and have been imparting Islamic education to nearly 6000 children from classes 1 to 8 enrolled in various schools in these districts in Kannada, mentions the report.
These schools have translated Quranic lessons to Kannada. The madrasa lessons are held every morning and evening for an hour.
The translation will also aid in breaking the common notion that madrasas are used to propagate terrorism and terror-related activities through brainwashing since the people will be able to comprehend the local language easily which will enable them to know what is being taught in the madrasas.
