Udupi : Display cards with unique identity numbers will be displayed in all auto rickshaws and taxis of Udupi districts, on a pilot basis with immediate effect. The display cards will be made mandatory from January 1 onwards.
On November 1, Friday, Western Range IGP Pratap Reddy launched new software developed by the Police Department to maintain detailed information of auto rickshaw and taxi drivers in Udupi district.
Henceforth, it will be mandatory for auto rickshaw and taxi drivers to enroll themselves in the ‘travel safety register’ in the police station in his area. The sub-inspector in every station will scrutinize the form and issue a display card with Unique Identity Number.
The display card will be behind driver’s seat so that passenger can easily identify the driver. In case the driver and the card do not match, then complaint can be lodged by sending an SMS to 9480805400. The number too will be mentioned in the display card.
Similar system will be implemented in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Chikmagalur districts in phases, the IGP said.
Udupi District Superintendent of police Dr Boralingaiah was also present.
