Dengue cases on the rise in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru:  With the onset of the South-West monsoon, Dakshina Kannada has been bitten by dengue and malaria. Though the monsoon has been weak across the state, dengue cases are rising day-by-day.

According to the report of the DS (District Surveillance) unit, Mangaluru has been reported nearly 25 confirmed dengue cases (includes ELISA, NS1 ELISA test from private and government hospitals) while 45 cases are suspected. Sullia and Belthangady are the most vulnerable regions to receive confirmed as well as suspected cases.

Taluk-wise Dengue cases till today:

Bantwal THO Dr Manjunath confirms eleven dengue cases from both government and private hospital through Elisa test, while 84 cases are suspected/NS1 (non-structural protein 1). While 36 other malaria cases have been reported from January to June including eight cases reported in the month of June. He also says that we are treating suspected cases as confirmed for the better treatment purpose.

While in Puttur 12 dengue cases have been confirmed in Elisa test and 161 cases are NS1 positive.

Dr Kalam, Belthangathy THO says 16 dengue cases have reported confirmed with Elisa test and 161 cases are NS1 positive.

In Sullia, 11 dengue cases are confirmed and 111 cases are suspected, while no malaria cases have been reported or confirmed so far.

Basic precautions:

People should try to wear fully covered clothes during monsoon and to those places where active cases are confirmed. As Dengue cases spread easily, several basic precautions are easy and necessary that people should follow

Dengue mosquitoes are generally dawn and dusk biters; hence closing doors before 04:30 pm, decreases mosquitoes gathering in your house.

People should take care to decrease as much as breeding source for mosquitoes such as water stagnation in any old vessel, earthen pots, tender coconut shells, plastic containers or unused bottles. Adult mosquitoes are likely to lay their eggs at these mentioned places, if water is present there.

Some ointments are available in the markets but they may have slight itchiness or allergic to skin to a few and works for a few 3-4 hours.

Meanwhile, government is fogging active dengue areas, also 50 help-workers are appointed to create awareness among people and covering 40 houses each day.
