DC urges to prioritise the drinking water

Udupi: DC Muddu Mohan said complete priority would be given to provide the drinking water in the city limit. Hereafter water used for any other purposes will not be tolerated and if any one try to do so strict action will be taken against them.

He appealed to the public to cooperate, as there is no other option to prevent the existing water scarcity,he was speaking to the media person while his visit to Baje dam.

DC  added that current water level at Baje dam is 1.85 million cubic meters and Shiroor is almost dry. The existing water level is sufficient only for one month.

The farmers were give water  supply once in a week, however it will be stopped hereafter. DC further said inflow stopped in the month of February. The evaporation rate is too high because of the excessive heat.

The district administration along with city Municipal Corporation is trying to find an alternate for this issue like drudging and putting bunds across. We are also working on the possibilities of a permanent solution.

DC said Shiroor dam water is given to the seven adjacent Gram Panchayaths. At present 2.5 million liters of water is supplied per day to Manipal University though no special agreement between MAHE and CMC it is the requirement.

He added  the district has received Rs 2.5 crore fund , Rs 2 crore for emergency works and also Udupi has received Rs 50 lakhs and Karkala and Saligrama received Rs 30 lakh which will be used for repairing works for new bore wells and pump set, tank facility etc
