DC reviews arrangements for counting of votes

Mangalore : A meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on May 12, Monday to inform political parties on various aspects pertaining to the May 16 counting of votes of Lok Sabha elections.

Prior to the meeting, the DC along with agents of candidates reviewed the arrangements made at the counting centre and also  the strong room where the EVMs are placed.  A total of 16 rooms two each for every assembly segments are ready and each room will have seven tables and the counting of 122 polling stations will be held  in one round.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said all counting staff should report to duty at 6 am on May 16.Agents of candidates should arrive before 7.30 am while counting will begin at sharp 8 am.

The DC said counting will be held in 17 rounds for Belthangady assembly segment, 15 rounds for Moodbidri, 17 rounds for Mangalore North, 16 rounds for Mangalore South, 15 for Mangalore, 18 for Bantwal, 16 for Puttur and 17 for Sullia.

He also said that mobile phones, ipads,  beedi, cigarettes, laptops and match boxes are banned inside the counting centres.

Additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu, District Health Officer Dr Shivakumar, Assistant Election Officers Renuka Prasad, Gokulads Nayak, PWD Engineer Gopal Naik and others were present.

All-party meeting: In connection with the counting, a meeting of all political parties was held at the DC office on Monday May 12.

The participants were informed about the arrangements made, deputation of officials and the mode of announcement of results. The DC said the candidates should appoint their agents for counting centres and that the taluk, gram panchayat  presidents or presidents of  local bodies cannot be agents.

It was informed at the meeting that parking arrangements have been made in the ground behind the Government quarters and Women’s Polytechnic at Bondel.

He said the counting of votes polled through 1766 EVMs will be held.

Assistant Commissioner Dr Prashanth, MCC Commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde and others were present.
