Dalit leaders in Mangaluru have voiced their opposition to the proposed implementation of the recommendations from the JC Prakash Committee report, which suggests granting Scheduled Caste (SC) status to the Moger community. They have cautioned the government against proceeding with these recommendations, warning of potential protests across the state if their request is ignored.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Dalit leader M Devadas emphasized that according to Article 341 of the Constitution, the Moger community in Karnataka is already classified as SC. However, he pointed out discrepancies in the classification of Moger community members from Uttara Kannada, traditionally engaged in fishing, who were categorized under Category-1, subject to certain restrictions on SC status outside Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kollegal.
Expressing concerns over the potential misuse of SC status, Devadas highlighted the confusion among the public following the news of the JC Prakash Committee report. He called on authorities to clarify which members of the Moger community are facing difficulties in obtaining SC certificates, alleging political pressure to issue such certificates to Mogers belonging to the fisher community.
