Mangaluru: “Life on Streets”, the photo contest from NewsKarnataka.com which was launched on July 3, 2016 has received a rousing response from the public. Over 300 entries from budding photographers were received from July 3 to August 15 and the response only held a mirror at the talent that is brimming in the budding photographers.
Several entries were submitted by talented professional photographers and amateur photo enthusiasts.
The most difficult part of the competition, ie selecting the winner has already begun as our much acclaimed judges – veteran photographer Yajna Acharya, Orthodontist and artist Dr Akhter Husain and renowned photographer Kishan Rao are looking at the entries critically.
The valedictory function is all set to be held on Saturday, August 20 at 5pm at the City Centre mall.
One winner and five consolation prize winners will walk away with a cash prize worth Rs 30,000 and other goodies. The winning photos will be featured in www.newskarnataka.com and Karnataka Today magazine. The first prize will be awarded Rs 10,000 cash prize, a trophy with a free subscription to ‘Karnataka Today’. A special award, that’s the People’s Choice Award winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 5000 and a free subscription. Five consolation winners will go home with a cash prize of Rs 2000 and a free subscription.
On this occasion, the team NewsKarnataka.com will be honoring two of the very famous street warriors on the occasion. Mangaluru’s well-known Traffic Warden Joe Gonsalves and Good Samaritan U Hasanabba will grace the occasion and also accept the felicitation.

Our 95-year-old Joe Gonsalves, the pioneer of the Traffic Warden Squad in Mangaluru needs no introduction. With an experience of 75 years behind the steering wheel not only in India but also countries like England, United States and Canada, his traffic warden system has helped the traffic cops in the city to manage the congested traffic in the city with a lot more ease. A lot of youngsters from the city’s educational institutions have taken up the initiative and joined the squad with the nonagenarian which helps in better management of city’s traffic. Joe Gosalves’s initiative has definitely done a lot of good in regulating the vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the city.

Charmadi Hasanabba
Often called a ‘one-man ambulance’, Hasanabba has carried accident victims in his own vehicle and saved at least 1,000 accident victims. Popularly known as ‘Charmadi Hasanabba’, he has saved accident victims in Charmadi Ghat by shifting them to hospitals at the right time. Hasanabba runs a small restaurant in Charmadi Ghat in Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada. He has been helping accidents victims get admitted to hospitals from 1986. Hasanabba who was educated only till Class 2 believes, to help someone all you need is a heart and he surely has a rich one!
