Mangalore: The Congress has finalised the name Mahabala Marla as its candidate to contest the post of the mayor, whereas Kavitha Hoigebazar has been chosen to contest for the post of the Deputy Mayor. The election is scheduled to be held at MCC office on March 13.

It is learnt that  DK District in-charge Minister has already elicited the opinion of Congress corporators on Monday, March 10 following  which the candidates for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor were finalized by the Congress during an internal voting on March 12.

Three-time councillor, Mahabala Marla, representing Kadri Padavu ward will be fighting against opposition BJP’s  Tilak Raj, while Kavitha will face Poornima  of the BJP in the election  for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor respectively.As the Congress enjoys absolute majority in MCC, the party candidates are sure to be elected to the top posts.

Those chosen for the seats of chairpersons of standing committees are, Ashok D K (Works Committee), Jacintha Alfred (Finance Committee), Ashok Shetty (Health Committee), Purushottam Chitrapura,(Accounts Committee), and Shashidhar Hegde( Chief Whip). BJP has elected Premananda Shetty as the opposition leader.

Concluding the announcements the standing committee presidents took oath during the meeting.
