Udupi : Raghupathi Bhat, former Udupi MLA has come down heavily on the state government for going back on its promise to revive the defunct Brahmavar Sugar Factory.
Speaking to the media here on August 16, Friday, Bhat said the Congress which had promised to revive the factory was now speaking about converting it into a Horticultural University. He was referring to the Independence Day address of Vinaykumar Sorake wherein he made an announcement in this regard.
Raghupathi Bhat said even the previous BJP government aimed at reviving the factory but could not succeed. Moreover, the revival of the factory would be a great boon to over 5000 sugarcane growers. Even the land around the factory belongs to farmers and not government, he said.
He said the government need to take farmers into confidence before going ahead with the project. Stating that a Horticultural University proposal is welcome, Raghupathi Bhat said it should not be set up in place of Brahmavar Sugar Factory. He, instead suggested that the factory should be set up at Kolalagiri where it was earlier proposed to have an agricultural college.
